History of BB Transport

The business was founded in 1970 by Alex Munro, who bought an existing parcel business with two flat deck Bedford trucks.

In 1972 Coenie Munro, the previous Managing Director, joined his dad expanding the business and added furniture removal and general cartage work. They were joined by Coenie’s wife (Susan) who took over the book keeping and other administrative duties. Susan is still adding valuable expertise in the financial and administrative sections today and Coenie (although retired as a director) oversees the workshops in Kendal where he applies his experience.

The business expanded and a new section, and equipment plant hire was established.

In 1981 Gerhard Munro (Coenie’s brother) joined the business and the first mine rehabilitation contract was awarded by Anglo American at Endumeni Colliery. Gerhard is the current Mechanical Director and continues to add unmatched experience and skill. For the next 2 decades BB Transport successfully completed a significant number of rehabilitation, bulk earthworks and sinkhole rehabilitation projects which would also later be a significant factor in becoming the leader in sinkhole rehabilitation.

In 1994 the shareholders of BB Transport bought an insolvent company, Sunshine Crushers (Pty) Ltd, who mined hard rock near Dundee. BB Transport built a crushing and screening plant and re-established the once bankrupt company to a reputable and profitable mine. The business was sold in 2008 to a JSE listed company Afrimat Ltd. BB then invested in expanding their mining and rehabilitation portfolio, which allowed the company to proceed in that direction more aggressively with increased capacity. Soon after this BB moved their head office to the Mpumalanga region.

In 2003 Alex Munro, the son of Coenie and Susan Munro and the first of the third generation, joined the company as a civil engineer. Using his trade the company added a civil division with Alex as the current Operations Director.

In 2007 Colly Meintjes, the daughter of Coenie and Susan Munro and a Chartered Accountant, joined the group and is the current Financial director.

In 2008 Gerbrandt Alberts, the current Managing Director, joined the company and added a new dimension of leadership and vision, contributing in expanding the reputable family business to bigger heights with unlimited possibility.

Ntombi Mazubane joined the company in 2018 as a non-executive director and brings an abundance of mining experience and business initiative to the company. She is well known in the industry for her skill and strong leadership. Ntombi adds immense value to the goals, vision and future of the organization.
